How to Apply
BEFORE You Begin the Application Process:
Prepare responses to the 2 essay prompts below.
Part I (Mini Essay): ACTIVITIES
Our experience is that practically everyone who applies for the Bryan Hall Learning Community can furnish a list of activities that is impressive, in terms of both quantity and quality. We recognize that many high school students participate in certain activities in order to qualify for a scholarship (e.g., Florida's'Bright Futures' program). So, rather than listing all of your activities here, be selective. In choosing details to list, some applicants might concentrate on extracurricular activities such as student government, volunteer work for various agencies, or perhaps athletic competition; some applicants might choose to emphasize activities that are primarily academic, such as entering a science fair, tutoring peers, or writing a book of poems. Everyone's not the same, so we don't expect these lists to be the same, either.
In a total of 100-150 words, briefly describe up to three of the most significant activities in which you have been involved during high school that show the positive, thoughtful contribution you can make to this Learning Community and describe below the list what you have learned from participating in these activities.
Part II (Essay): CURIOSITY AND THE DESIRE TO LEARN
Now that you have told us about your activities, we would like to hear about your curiosity. We value students who show appreciation of learning for the sake of learning. We are looking for applicants who show genuine excitement and admiration for learning and being informed. Again, everyone isn't the same, so we do not expect everyone to take the same approach here. We look forward to reading your unique response.
In 300-350 words, provide an example of when your intellectual curiosity – not classroom success – motivated you to explore a particular topic or subject on your own. Describe the efforts you made to pursue this knowledge, as well as what you learned.
